The City of Rio Communities was incorporated in 2013.   It is a city of nearly 5000 people located along the east side of the Rio Grande River in southeastern Valencia County. Rio Communities is part of the Albuquerque Metro area is about 45 minutes from the Albuquerque International Airport and downtown Albuquerque.  Rio Communities is close enough for easy access to Albuquerque but far enough away to provide a more competitive cost of living and cost of doing business. The median home value for Q2 2013 in Rio Communities was $116,500 compared with $177,000 in Albuquerque.

Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Area

In central New Mexico, the Rio Grande supports a cottonwood-willow riparian forest (commonly referred to by its Spanish name, bosque) and associated wetlands that are invaluable for sustaining wildlife and a supply of water for irrigation.  In the past, many wetlands were converted to agriculture and, more recently, impacted by urbanization.

Abo Ruins Salinas National Monument

Tucked away in the middle of New Mexico you’ll find Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. The three sites offer a glimpse into a unique time in history. A time entrenched with cultural borrowing, conflict, and struggles. The now abandoned sites stand as reminders of the Spanish and Pueblo People’s early encounters.

Bosque del Apache

Situated between the Chupadera Mountains to the west and the San Pascual Mountains to the east, Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1939 to provide a critical stopover for migrating waterfowl. The refuge is well known for the tens of thousands of cranes, geese, and ducks who winter here each year.

During spring and fall migration, the 57,331-acre refuge is a spot to rest and refuel for many birds as they follow the Rio Grande through the woodlands which hug the riverbanks, called bosque.
